Day 7 Castle Howard

Today, J headed off to Duxford for the Flying Legends airshow and Fiona and I headed off to Castle Howard in North Yorkshire.

What a stunning place.  Shame about the ugly white van in front when I took the picture.

It is a private residence and has been in the Carlisle family for the last 300 years.  It’s also where the TV series Brideshead Revisited was filmed back in 1981.  The building was started in 1699 and took over a hundred years to complete.  Then a fire in 1940 did major damage and even today, they are still restoring part of the castle that were damaged in the blaze.

The gardens are amazing as well, with large sweeping lawns with the Atlas fountain as it’s centrepiece.

Then there is the walled garden, with roses and lavender.

We wandered the castle, stopped for a bite of lunch in the café and then wandered the gardens.
Time for a loo stop and we headed off to the village of Helmsley, just another of the quaint and picturesque villages in this part of England.

Home to a roast chicken dinner with rice and salad, and time for a good old natter with Fiona before eventually heading off to bed quite late.

Not many words to describe today’s adventures, but there are only so many superlatives you can use before it gets tedious. I will upload some photos instead.
